Felt has launched its latest collection of 100% wool felt rugs made entirely by hand by nomadic women in the Tien Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia, from the wool of the indigenous mountain sheep. Made using a traditional process that dates back at least 2,500 years, the rugs consist of a thick flattened wool felt base onto which is attached a surface pattern of interlocking wool felt shapes outlined in braid. The shapes are symbols for the birds, animals, plants, waters and mountains that surround the nomads. These are combined to describe scenes, bestow blessings and tell stories of life in the area dubbed the “Mountains of Heaven.”

You can't really find wool

You can't really find wool felt rugs like these in the uk. I like the fact that they were hand made by the nomadic women in the Tien Shan Mountains. I hope that the commercialisation if their craft do not have any adverse effects on their culture and tradition and that the women were not exploited.
